Free fly fishing clinic

7/8/2014

Have you ever watched a person fly fishing and considered how you would like to learn to do that? The Sal font Chapter of Trout Unlimited in cooperation with the City of Spencer will host a free fly fishing clinic at Heritage Park on July 17 at 6:00 pm. The clinic will teach anglers the basics of fly fishing from the why to the how. Anyone interested is encouraged to attend.

“To many of us, fishing is about more than just catching fish,” said Philip Smith, President of the Sal font Chapter, “it is about the total experience. Many of us in TU have discovered that the time-honored sport of fly fishing is something to fall in love with. From tying flies in the winter to catching bass in a local pond using your own created fly there are so many things in fly fishing that enhance that fishing experience more than with conventional gear. We are not a fly fishing club, but since many of us have a passion for this sport, we want to give every opportunity to those in our home community to learn how to do it if they wish.”

The chapter is a local not-for-profit organization that seeks to conserve, protect, and restore central West Virginia’s trout waters, cultivate new anglers and engage local communities within their mission. “The name Sal font is derived from the scientific name for our state fish, the brook trout, which is the only native trout to West Virginia and an indicator species of clean water. Our chapter honors this fish as the mascot for clean water and our sporting heritage,” says Smith. The City of Spencer embraces this new organization. “Even though there are not any trout swimming through Spring Creek in town, the goals of this new Trout Unlimited Chapter are certainly about enhancing the greater sporting experience for our citizens. We support their effort and hope the community does too,” said Mayor Terry Williams.

The two-hour session will go over basic equipment and casting. There may be a longer, more detailed course given by the TU chapter in the winter if there is enough interest expressed in the community. The 2014 Bluegill Tournament surprised us all with how smoothly and perfectly executed the entire event was. The turnout was excellent for a first year event, the prizes over the top and everyone had fun. A total of 22 children registered and there were well over 30 adults. We signed up 6 new SFTU members and picked up about 400 pounds of litter from around the lake.

Special thanks to Cub Scout Pack 437 for supporting such a great event. Next year we intend to invite several more Cub Scout Packs. Thanks to sponsors Gary's Sporting, PATCH, Vandalia Rodworks, Recycled Waders, The Fiberglass Manifesto, BreamBugs.com, RepYourWater, and Cabela's for prize donations.

The winners in the adult categories were:
Largest Fish (18" Walleye) - Jason Conrad
Most Bluegill (14) - Joe Hall
Largest Bluegill - Chris Taylor

The winners in the children's categories were:
Largest Fish (7" bass) - Trent Dever
Largest Fish (7" crappie) - Nick Taylor
Most Bluegill (18) - Aiden Mitchell
Largest Bluegill - Garrett Simon

The Sal font Chapter Bluegill Tournament is now officially on the WV REAP Make It Shine April Statewide Cleanup as we help our local community of Spencer to clean up Charles Fork Lake. While not a trout fishery, SFTU believes in giving back to the community while raising funds and while encouraging fishing with our youth. Funds raised from this event will be used toward trout conservation and restoration projects in Central West Virginia. In addition, the Spencer Cub Scouts Pack 437 will be involved in the SFTU Bluegill Tournament as they earn their Fishing Beltloops and engage in a watershed service project in assisting SFTU with the trash cleanup. On Friday, April 25 (Arbor Day) they will also be engaging in a watershed service project by planting trees to stabilize streambanks on Spring Creek near Spencer - Way to go Pack 437! It is important for us to engage and involve these future conservation champions in TU as some of them may go on to become great anglers and TU leaders.

If you are interested in attending the April 26 SFTU Bluegill Tournament in Spencer, feel free to contact Randy Ash for more information at randyash4@aol.com or use the RSVP form below.

The Sal font Chapter is officially chartered by TU National! We are Chapter 191. Anyone wishing to transfer their membership to this new chapter in Central West Virginia may do so by contacting TU and requesting a transfer to Chapter 191, Sal font Chapter.

We are excited to get things rolling. Some of the goals for SFTU are:

  • Fundraising: We will be hosting a bluegill tournament at Charles Fork Lake in April
  • Stream Restoration: We have identified the upper Gauley River as a target area for restoration
  • Angling Improvement: We want to grow the visibility of angling in the central WV area, teach fly fishing, and encourage children/women angling.
  • Policy Influence: Sal font TU will monitor policy and provide input to the WV Council of Trout Unlimited to influence fisheries management policy at a statewide level and directly where it impacts the local level.

The rainbow trout have hatched and are already taking small portions of food in Loana Hoffman's Special Education classroom at Walton Elementary School. Trout Unlimited volunteers assist teachers at both Geary and Walton Elementary Schools in growing trout for education (and inspiration).
